Answers to questions Darren

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our music video shows convention of indie rock groups with the clothes and live band footage but also reflects the bands punk side with the smashing of a television at the end which is quite a punk thing to do. We also include plenty of close ups and shots of the lead singer as this fits convention also. We included some surreal elements to the video such as the screen within a screen technique which is quite a rare occurrence in most music videos so it is challenging the traditional form of the straight forward music video, we also used the dancing people to go into the TV set and end up in the same room as the band playing, which is quite strange. These surreal elements are a common convention to quite a lot of indie music videos.
We do challenge forms of convention with the way we marketed our product though, from the smashed TV advert which doesn’t feature any of the band members, and the digipack which is rare for bands to make. We did this to add a sense of mystery to the product and to offer something that not many other artists do, with extra features included for those really interested with the band.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The combination of my main product and ancillary texts is very effective in the way we have combined them to be simultaneous with the magazine advert reflecting the smashed TV from the music video and the digipack featuring shots from the music video as well as photographs of the band which aren’t lifted directly from the music video but do feature the same band members which is effectively coherent having the same people throughout.
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Our feedback was extremely helpful and we learned a lot from it because our peers were very clear in what they liked
-The lip syncing
-The way we made the screen within a screen technique to fit the message of the song
-Good variety of shots, including close ups
-Frequent notion of looking
The feedback also expressed what people didn’t like about the video such as
-No real relationship between music and visuals (which I disagree with to a point)
-More variety needed in settings

The audience feedback was helpful in backing up our own personal thoughts that there should have been more variety but camera constraints and problems actually getting the group together caused this. We tried to combat the fact that we only had access to one room by color correcting the section with the people dancing to try hiding this.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In planning, new media technologies were invaluable in these stages. I used Google and YouTube frequently for researching my band and watching their music video to see how it differed from our interpretation. In the planning stages of our video, once again Google was a great help, as well as some image hosting sites which allowed us to get good photos of televisions for our blog to get our concept across. When actually putting our music video together we used final cut express to cut our images together, and Photoshop was used in conjunction with images from final cut to make both the magazine advert and the digipack. At evaluation stage, we used YouTube to upload our final video.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our music video uses many common conventions of indie rock music videos. The main one we used was having it performance based, this is used throughout the indie rock genre so we thought it was essential that we had it in our video. The camerawork in rock videos often involves lots of close ups of the lead singer and the instruments so we tried to incorporate similar techniques into our video. We challenged this convention slightly by also using mid shots of the bands members.
A common convention of indie music videos is for them to be slightly surreal or quirky. This can vary from strange costumes to the band playing in strange locations. We tried to add a surreal element to our video by having the band playing in the same room as the girls were watching them on the television.
Another convention of indie music videos is the clothing that the band wear. There are certain styles of clothing that are associated with indie music. We dressed our band in these styles of clothes to fit with the convention.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Our main product and ancillary texts combined together very effectively. We tried to keeps themes throughout all of our products. The main theme we kept was the idea of looking at a television screen. This idea came from the title of the song ‘TV riot’.
Our video had lots of shots of the band playing on the television, this was our unique selling point for our video. We also used the idea of looking at a television screen as the front cover for our digipak. We put a picture of the band inside a television screen to give a similar effect to our video. We used the idea of a television in our magazine advert but left it with just some text on the screen to intrigue a potential consumer.
Another theme we used throughout all three products was the destruction of televisions. This idea came from the song title ‘TV riot’. We thought of rioting and smashing things so we decided to incorporate broken televisions into our products. Our magazine advert had a television that was smoking and exploding. We used this idea in our music video by having the last shot be one of a television being smashed on the ground. Finally, we used a photo of this smashed television as a background for one panel of our digipak.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Our audience feedback was very positive. The feedback for our video was especially good. They said the lip syncing was very good for the lead singer and that the bands performance was very appealing. They also liked the idea of the band performing in the television as it gave a good notion of looking and fitted with the title of the song very well. However, the feedback was not all positive. We were also told that we should have used more variety of locations as our whole video was in one room.
The feedback for our ancillary texts was also very positive. Many people commented on the consistency throughout all of our products. They liked how we kept the theme of televisions throughout. The feedback we received for our magazine advert was that it was very effective as it stand out so it would be very effective at catching a potential consumer’s eye. Furthermore, it said that the contrast between the black background and the red from the televisions was very effective.
From the feedback we received for our Digipak we know that it was liked by most. It said that the writing on the television was very effective as it corresponds with the song title and the picture was good because it related to the music video. The picture of our band playing was popular because it helped the viewers to identify each band member. However, our feedback also told us that our Digipak was quite a basic structure and could do with some more filters and effects to enhance it.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
When planning our music video we used the internet lot. We used youtube to research similar videos from the same genre of music and google to search for information and images. We used blogger to keep a record of everything we planned to do. When constructing our video we used final cut express to edit together our footage. We used photoshop to put our digipak and magazine advert together. We also used blogger to let other groups evaluate our products so we could get feedback on them. Finally we used youtube to upload our video onto the internet for everyone to view.

PEER ANCILLIARY TASK FEEDBACK

The writing inside the television is very effective and corresponds with the title of the song and the actual music video.
Picture of the band playing is good as we can identify the group members.
There is consistency with the music video with the band members and the photo of the television crashed on the floor which is the main focus in the music video.

The magazine advert also shows huge consistency as it is the tlevision with the writing within. It stands out and is bold which is very effective in catching the audiences eye. Furthermore, the contrast between the black background and the re from the t.v is vastly effective.

To improve:

-It is a basic structure
-The pictures could have more effects, and some Photoshop filters and effects would be necessary to enhance the Digipak.
