Response To Pitch Feedback

We really liked the idea of having some of the crowd wear cardboard boxes on their heads like TV's so we have decided to use it in our video and are going to incorporate them into the crowd shots to add a surreal element. Also we are going to use the idea of someone trying to change the channel and seeing different shots of the band. We have decided to not film at college as it may resemble a classroom which is not the image we are aiming for.

Pitch Feedback

After showing our pitch we were given feedback by the class. They suggested:
  • We should be careful of filming a screen as it can look very blurry.
  • We should get people who can actually play the instruments so it doesn't look fake.
  • Not filming at college as it often looks too much like a classroom.
  • We shouldn't use very much 'found footage' of riots as most of the footage must contain our own work, however a small amount may be used.
  • Health and safety must be considered when shooting the TV out of the window.
They also said:
  • Our plot idea was very original.
  • The magazine advert was a good idea as it didn't show the band but instead caught the eye with a unique style.
  • They liked the idea of everyone in the video ending up in the same space inside the television set.
  • That throwing the television from the window was a very original idea.
We also got the suggestion of using cardboard boxes as TV helmets for people in the crowd, dancing with the regular fans. Another member of the class suggested using a shot of someone trying to change the channel and flicking to different shots of the band each time the channel changes.

Moodboard

Example music videos

This video is very surreal following the conventions of indie music.

This video uses similar ideas to ours with the television showing the artist singing.

This video is performance based and slightly surreal following the conventions of an indie rock video.

Similar Music Video

We will try to recreate an atmosphere similar to the one in this video with the crowd all dancing and enjoying themselves.

Pitch Powerpoint

Riot footage

We may use footage of real riots in our video such as this one:

Locations

The people watching the tv's in our video will be in bedrooms and sitting rooms similar to these

Indie Band Clothing Styles

We will get our band to dress in indie styled clothing to fit with the conventions of indie music videos.

Track choice

We have decided to use track 1 'TV Riot' by the adored, as it has clear edit points which we can utilize and we feel our idea for that track is the strongest.

Track Choices And Initial ideas

Our three tracks we have short listed are:

Track 01: Tv Riot / The Adored
Track 09: La Song / Supergrass
Track 10: Saturday Night / The Thrills

We personally thought these tracks would be the easiest to make into a good music video.

Our Ideas for each video are:

Track 01: A man watches television and is channel hopping, every channel has the same person singing back the lyrics to the viewer. Set ideas are: Sitting Room with the TV, News room, Crime watch with the band being beating by the police, Jeremy Kyle/Springer type show. Puppets with the band in the middle. Foreign black and white subtitled film.

Track 09: ?

Track 10: We will have a candid camera style shoot, by singing the lyrics around real members of the public to get their reactions. We will blend this with some actors because we can't shoot too much unplanned action.

Example of an auteur

Spike Jonze is considered an auteur of modern music videos. in his videos he uses a lot of slow motion. he often contradicts the music to the visulas, he will put a slow paced song with fast paced imagery such as skateboarding and explosions. he also has very few cuts in his work useing very long shots that drag out over long periods of time. his music videos often have the feeling of being a mini movie where you could take the song away and still watch the visuals like a short film.

Auteur analysis

Auteur - (French for Author)
Auteur theory was first created in the 1950's by french cinema critics/directors, Le Cahier du cinema was their publication that discussed who should or shouldn't be recognised as an auteur - someone who's work has particular characteristics could be stylish (micro), structural, thematic or about process.

Album cover analysis

This album cover suggests that the album is a rock or punk album. the photos show the band members pulling funny faces which suggests that they enjoy having fun whilst the produce music. this laid back approach is very different to what you would expect in the cover of a rap or dance cd. a rap album would have nice cars and people flashing money with expensive jewellry and a dance album would have pritty women in bikinis on hot beaches.

The album cover has a simple style which depicts the careless attitude of the band. it also has the bands name written in a font that looks like a logo, this is also quite common amongst rock/pop bands such as blink 182 or alien ant farm.

Goodwin's Video Analysis

Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (Routledge 1992)

1) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

This video shows clear characteristics of a punk/rock video. it is performance based with lots of footage of the band playing their instruments in front of a large crowd.

2)There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

There is an amplifying relationship between the lyrics and visuals of this video. The song is about not being a part of mainstream society and the video is filled with hundreds of people who are all very individual.

3)There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

There is an illustrative relationship between the music and visuals of this video. the song is very fast and loud and the visuals are of a huge party with everyone jumping around.

4)The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

There are lots of close ups off all the band members playing their instruments and the lead singr has a slight motif in the way he holds and sings into the mike, with his lips touching it as he sings.

5)There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

There are a lot of references to the notion of looking as their is a large crowd who are all watching the band play and dance around.

6)There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

There is a slight intertextual reference to boy band music videos when the band do a silly dance in the car park as though they are mocking boy bands dance routines.
