Goodwin's Video Analysis
Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (Routledge 1992)
1) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
This video shows clear characteristics of a punk/rock video. it is performance based with lots of footage of the band playing their instruments in front of a large crowd.
2)There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
There is an amplifying relationship between the lyrics and visuals of this video. The song is about not being a part of mainstream society and the video is filled with hundreds of people who are all very individual.
3)There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
There is an illustrative relationship between the music and visuals of this video. the song is very fast and loud and the visuals are of a huge party with everyone jumping around.
4)The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
There are lots of close ups off all the band members playing their instruments and the lead singr has a slight motif in the way he holds and sings into the mike, with his lips touching it as he sings.
5)There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
There are a lot of references to the notion of looking as their is a large crowd who are all watching the band play and dance around.
6)There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).
There is a slight intertextual reference to boy band music videos when the band do a silly dance in the car park as though they are mocking boy bands dance routines.
